What it’s like to live in Syracuse, New York (Greater Syracuse Area):

Forbes Magazine rated our area as one of the top 10 places to raise a family. Our location allows living in a rural, slow-paced community while experiencing the beauty of all four seasons. In addition, there are highly sought-after primary and secondary school systems in private, public, and parochial offerings and a high-quality, comprehensive healthcare system that includes five hospitals, with over 1,500 practicing physicians and a full range of long-term care facilities.

Whatever you want, you’ll find outdoors in CNY. Syracusans may like to complain about snow, but it gives us a little swagger as we head out to ski, ride a snowmobile, or brush off a lake to drill an ice-fishing hole. Spring, Summer, and early Fall, you’ll find people boating, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, white-water rafting, or hiking through breathtaking beauty.

Syracuse is “the 20-minute city.” Popular suburbs are 20 minutes or less from the city’s center, and it’s seldom more than a 20-minute drive to rivers and lakes, ski slopes and hiking trails, or rural solitude. So we don’t waste time in traffic jams on the way to work in the morning – or heading home at night.

We bleed Orange! The Carrier Dome is the largest basketball arena in the United States. We’ve seated more than 30,000 fans for the big games, especially with rivals like Duke, Georgetown, Villanova, and Connecticut. Our seven CNY counties have more than two dozen private and public colleges and universities. They give us one of the largest concentrations of students, professors, researchers, authors, artists, scientists, engineers, and guest speakers in America.

Downtown Syracuse has recently boomed with apartments, condos, restaurants, and nightlife. The energy has brought digital companies, engineering firms, startups, and entrepreneurs, enticed by urban excitement and the culture to satisfy diverse tastes. Our Triple-A baseball team provides affordable family fun in a beautiful ballpark. If you want to go for a drive, the hills and valleys in LaFayette south of Syracuse are loaded with orchards, and apples are the main attraction. USA Today voters have twice named Beak & Skiff as the nation’s best apple orchard.

Finally, if you like to travel, we are less than a day’s drive to New York City, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., and Boston. Syracuse Hancock International Airport also offers a number of nonstop destinations, and connections to family and friends.  It annually wins the award for the nation’s best snow removal. Bottom line, it’s no surprise U.S. News pegs Syracuse as one of the best metro areas to call home!
