Associate Pastor of Discipleship and Connections
Job Overview
Position Overview:
The Associate Pastor is the primary shepherd for our Community Groups. They will oversee the Community Group leaders and overall vision, strategy and implementation of discipleship within these groups so that our people may know, show, and share Christ's love.
The Associate Pastor will also be responsible for our Connections Ministry. This important ministry helps people move from first-time guests to involved members. The pastor will discern where people are in their spiritual journey, and help them get involved in our church family and ministries, so that they may be new creations who help others become new creations (aka disciples of Jesus).
The Associate Pastor is the champion of our Discipleship Pathway, ensuring in partnership with the Senior Pastor, that we are intentionally and relationally helping our people know, show, and share Christ's love better than they were before.
Job Description

Mission: To be new creations who help others become new creations (Matt. 28:18-20; 2 Cor. 5:17)
Vision: To cultivate life transformation that people may passionately know, show, and share Christ's love (Phil. 3:8; Matt. 5:16; Rom. 10:14-15)
Qualifications and Character
- Affirmed by the church (FBCJC) as a member and leader of the church body.
- Willingly submit to the FBCJC mission, vision, beliefs, and Membership Covenant.
- Willingly submit and abide by the Employee Handbook and all policies therein
- Strong personal commitment to the Lord and a definite call to serve Him
- Clear passion, gifting, and training to meet ministry requirements.
- Prefer at least 3-5 years experience in ministry, with some degree of focus on small groups and/or discipleship
- Able to engage new or unengaged believers and shepherd them toward an active faith and partnership with the church
- Self-starter and the ability to cast vision
- Demonstrates integrity, humility, and flexibility
- A team player who recruits and develops teams and leaders
- Excellent interpersonal, delegation, time management, and communication skills
- Has the desire and understanding that this position potentially leads to becoming the senior pastor.
- Has passion and ability to faithfully preach God's Word.
Relationship to the church
- The Associate Pastor is first and foremost accountable to the Lord Jesus Christ; secondly, to the Spiritual Leader Board, including the pastor. Day to day accountability will be to the Senior Pastor.
- The Associate Pastor is expected to attend and participate in weekly staff meeting, and Sunday services. Other meetings may be required as ministry leaders see fit.
- The Associate Pastor needs to model servanthood to the body, conforming to the patterns of 1 Timothy 3:1-7.
- The Associate Pastor will have performance and ministry evaluations after three months, six months, and one year. Annual performance evaluations will be done after the first year of service. Evaluations will be conducted by the Senior Pastor and other appointed leaders.
Responsibilities
General Responsibilities
- To strive to fulfill the mission and vision of FBCJC through the Community Group & Connection Ministries and continue to evaluate both in light of our mission and vision.
- The Associate Pastor is responsible for oversight and execution of all Connection ministry classes including Starting Point and Membership.
- The Associate Pastor is the champion of our Discipleship Pathway, ensuring in partnership with the Senior Pastor, that we are intentionally and relationally helping our people know, show, and share Christ's love better than they were before.
Specific Responsibilities
- To recruit, train, and oversee the Community Group volunteer leaders. This includes an annual training for veteran and new leaders, plus quarterly check-ins with leaders to equip and encourage.
- To reach out to local organizations and schools to find and/or create opportunities for Community Groups to serve the community and live out our mission and vision.
- To find, create, and discern biblically based, Christ-honoring curriculums for our Community Groups
- To recruit, train, and oversee the Connections Team
- To promote, invite, prepare, and facilitate Starting Point (i.e. a quarterly, short introduction and lunch for new(er) guests to get to know the heart of FBCJC and leaders)
- To promote, invite, prepare, and facilitate our Membership Class (i.e. a quarterly class for folks wanting to partner with FBCJC and call it home.)
- To communicate to the administrative assistant and church on all Community Groups and Connection events.
- To communicate with the Senior Pastor and Spiritual Leader Board ministry goals, evaluations, problem solving, and prayer support.
- To prioritize personal spiritual and leadership growth by remaining professionally current in one's areas of leadership and ministry through reading, studying, coaching training, seminars, and conferences. To make spiritual growth a priority through regular personal Bible study, prayer, service, and occasionally through retreating.
- To preach – generally once a month
- To fulfill other related duties as assigned or negotiated in order to meet the needs of FBCJC.
Benefits and Compensation
- Compensation package, including salary, housing allowance, insurance, and retirement will be considered annually by the Board, with final approval by the church body.
- Paid time off (PTO) is based on the total years in ministry at FBCJC. Pastors are given 2 weeks for the first 5 years served and increases in one-week increments for every additional five years served up to 4 weeks total of PTO.
- Paid holidays are: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day
