Associate Pastor of Spiritual Formation and Mobilization
Job Overview
At Berean our mission is to glorify God by making, maturing and mobilizing disciples who display and declare the gospel in Kodiak and around the world.
Job Overview Over the last two years, God has been growing Berean rapidly—especially among young families. We believe the Lord is now leading us to call an Associate Pastor who will help us grow spiritually healthy, progressively holy disciples, and unleash them to live as sent ones in Kodiak and beyond. Our prayer is that this pastor will help Berean become a powerhouse for discipleship, cultivating a culture of genuine fellowship, deep discipleship, and passionate outreach. We long to see this island saturated with the Gospel and to send out mature, resilient disciples who will take the good news to the least reached for the glory of God.
About the Position The Associate Pastor will partner closely with the Senior Pastor to shepherd the church, mature believers in their faith, and mobilize them to mission. His primary focus will be leading our home group ministry and developing outreach initiatives in Kodiak. He will take leadership of our home group ministry, helping our home groups become an engine for discipleship. He will develop home group leaders who are equipped to teach the Word faithfully, cultivate a culture of mutual care within the group, and lead their group to show and share the Gospel to Kodiak. He will also develop outreach initiatives and ministries to help our church engage the people of Kodiak with the Gospel. While both the Associate Pastor and Senior Pastor are elders and have equal votes on the Elder Council, the Associate Pastor directly reports to the Senior Pastor for his vocational responsibilities.
About Berean
At Berean, we are a church of broken people passionately pursuing Jesus together. Our purpose is to glorify God in all we do. Our body contains families from diverse denominational backgrounds unified by a common desire to make Christ preeminent in all things.
We emphasize expository preaching and church-wide discipleship. Berean is an intergenerational congregation, spanning from young families to elders. We have strong children's and youth ministries focused on personal discipleship, as well as an excellent Special Needs ministry serving people with cognitive, physical, and emotional exceptionalities. Our church isn't perfect, but we genuinely love one another—and we take care of our pastors.
Berean is not affiliated with any denomination or association, though it was planted in 1960 by the Regular Baptists. Theologically, we are generally aligned with the 1689 London Baptist Confession.
About Kodiak
Kodiak Island is a stunning yet spiritually needy place, and serving here is both deeply rewarding and stretching. Known as the Emerald Isle, Kodiak offers vibrant landscapes and abundant outdoor opportunities. While people tend to think of ice, snow, and darkness when they think of Alaska, Kodiak's location in the Gulf of Alaska makes our climate more like the Pacific Northwest than mainland Alaska.
Not only is Kodiak one of the most beautiful places on earth, our greatest quality is our diverse and unified community. Located 250 miles south of Anchorage, Kodiak is an isolated community with its own unique culture. Kodiak may be limited in shops and restaurants, but the landscape offers many activities to residents who embrace our "outdoors culture," including hiking, hunting, fishing, surfing, and beach barbecues. Kodiak has a population of around 12,000 people, mostly unchurched. The island is home to a large population of Asian Americans and Alaska Natives (Alutiiq), as well as a large military community (Coast Guard and Navy).
