Associational Mission Strategist (AMS/DOM)

The Association Mission Strategist (AMS) for The Owen County Baptist Association (The Association) is tasked with providing responsible leadership through administration, leadership, counsel to pastors, church staff, and church lay leaders, interpretation and communication of information, and effective public relations. They are to cooperate with member churches to enhance their efficiency and effectiveness, and collaborate with the Kentucky Baptist Convention (KBC) and the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) in fulfilling their responsibilities.

The AMS will be employed by The Association following a recommendation by an elected Search Committee comprising members from The Association. Approval by the Executive Board and a vote by both The Association messengers in a special joint meeting are required for the appointment.

Qualifications, Education, and Experience

  1. The AMS must be Christian, saved by grace through faith in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. As such, he must consistently live a life worthy of that calling and conforming to biblical standards of behavior.
  2. The AMS must perceive and confess a clear calling to vocational ministry. As such, he must meet the biblical qualifications for an elder/overseer as outlined in Titus 1 and 1 Timothy 3 and that calling must have been affirmed through ordination. If he is married, his wife must likewise affirm and be in support of his call to ministry.
  3. The AMS must be a committed supporter of, and thoroughly acquainted with, Southern Baptist Missions and denominational structures. As such, he must also fully affirm the beliefs and standards of the Baptist Faith and Message Statement 2000.
  4. The AMS must communicate effectively in writing and orally to individuals and groups, in person and remotely. As such, he must be able to use and adapt to current trends and methods of communication and media distribution.
  5. The AMS must be a gifted administrator, organizing resources and motivating teams within The Association to carry out their tasks and to contribute to our joint mission. His administrative duties must be carried out in a timely manner without supervision.
  6. The AMS should have at least ten (10) years of experience in a ministry leadership role — i.e. Lead Pastor, Associate Pastor, etc. — and be able to show active Association participation.
  7. A Bachelor's Degree is preferred, with a preference of a Master's Degree from a biblically faithful, accredited theological seminary. Alternatively, a potential education substitute may be considered on a 2:1 year basis.

Activities and Responsibilities

  1. The AMS works under the direction of the Administrative Team, with the Executive Board of The Association having final authority. He is required to provide quarterly written reports to the Executive Board and an annual report to the Association at their annual meetings. He will seek to coordinate efforts toward the fulfillment of the collective missional purposes defined by these groups.
  2. The AMS collaborates closely with the Administrative Team, offering leadership and resources to fulfill the team's responsibilities. They aid in recruiting, training, and leading volunteers from member churches for key administration and ministry roles within The Association.
  3. The AMS should reside within the geographical boundaries of the Associational Churches Local Missions Field.
  4. The AMS is responsible for visiting each member church twice (2) per calendar year during regular services and meeting.
  5. The AMS will regularly meet with the pastoral staff of member churches at least once (1) a year in order to counsel, encourage, and assess the needs of member churches and staff.
  6. The AMS is encouraged to meet with lay leaders of member churches in order to build relationships, encourage, and foster communication between each member church and The Association as a whole.
  7. The AMS is tasked with fostering fellowship and partnership among member churches, providing leadership and resources to Association Ministry Teams, and promoting programs and ministries of The Association, Kentucky Baptist Convention (KBC), and Southern Baptist Convention (SBC). He will also serve as the general contact person for The Association. The AMS is encouraged to meet regularly with KBC Staff and to attend any/all meetings for State AMS.
  8. The AMS is tasked with facilitating at least two (2) workshops/trainings/events for the member church of The Association during the year — Fall & Spring — with the eventual goal to having these events at least once a quarter.
  9. The AMS will serve as a liaison between The Association and the Local Government. He is encouraged to attend Fiscal Court meetings regularly as well as serve as an Emergency Coordinator for The Association during emergency events (i.e. flooding, tornadoes, etc.).

Hours, Remuneration, Review, and Benefits

  1. Hours will depend on Full Time or Part Time/Bi-vocational status. The AMS will have the freedom to set his own schedule, however flexibility must be maintained to be available to all member churches at a variety of times as necessary.
  2. Salary will depend on either Full Time or Part Time/Bi-vocational status but may be negotiated based on education and experience.
  3. The AMS is entitled to four (4) weeks of paid vacation annually, with an additional week added after five (5) years of service. Vacation periods exceeding one (1) day must be agreed upon by the AMS and the Administration Teams. Upon retirement or departure, accrued vacation days will be compensated up to four (4) weeks.
  4. The AMS shall be free to observe the following paid holidays: New Year's Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Friday after Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Eve.
  5. The AMS shall not supply in any one (1) church within The Association more than four (4) times in one year without the approval of the Administration Team.
  6. The AMS is allowed to conduct up to four (4) revivals and/or conferences annually outside the The Association.
  7. Any income earned by the AMS through supply work, conducting revivals, funerals, weddings, and personal gifts will be retained by the AMS.
  8. The AMS is encouraged to attend work-related conferences, i.e. KBC Annual Meeting, SBC Annual Meeting, with expenses reimbursed as feasible.
  9. The AMS shall also be encouraged to pursue Continuing Education opportunities as his schedule permits and with the approval of the Administrative Team.
  10. The Administrative Team will conduct annual performance reviews of the AMS and recommend adjustments to the AMS's salary, benefits, and expense accounts for The Association budget annually.
