Communications Director
Job Overview
The Communications Director is the Chief Story Teller for the Midtown Fellowship Church Movement as well as the individual congregations. This role is also the brand owner who will set the tone for Midtown’s messaging as well as clarifying and aligning communications across the church and the community. This person will deliver high impact communications to people both inside and outside the church to help further the mission of gospel transformation.
The Communications Director is responsible for developing and executing creative integrated communications strategies for both the church as a whole and for individual congregations and ministries (Groups, Youth, etc). This means the coordination of seamless branding and messaging across all communication mediums including websites, social media, email, etc. — all while maintaining the “big picture” of the church’s varied ministries and activities.
The Communications Director embraces the burden of maintaining the brand of the church as well as overseeing the health and effectiveness of the team that executes communication.
The Communications Director will be responsible for developing high-performing partnerships with congregational and ministry teams, and with outside partnerships from whom we can learn and develop in areas of communication. Key principles of focus will include:
- Creating and telling the story for each congregation as well as the Movement as a whole
- Working to pinpoint congregational and ministry needs and provide next steps to meet them
- Removing barriers and distractions to eliminate information overload
This job may have unpredictable and sometimes inconsistent hours. This may include event photo
shoots, live streaming events, social media requests, etc.
Job Description
Functions & Responsibilities
COMMUNICATIONS
- Build an annual, movement-wide, strategic communication plan
- Oversee regular updates to the creative story being told by Midtown through the website, social media, etc.
- Content director for all graphics and communications that are produced and sent by the Movement or any congregation
- Lead all efforts related to the creation, strategy, and execution through all communications channels
- Internal communication enhancement
- Partner with pastors and ministries in developing custom communications strategies
- Manage copywriting, content development, and editing for all church communications
- Passion and proven competency at creating systems to capture and share stories of life change and ministry impact in ways that inform and inspire
- Train and develop staff in communication practices
- Stay current on trends in email marketing, social media, websites, etc.
- Ensure congregational teams are following the communications strategy across all channels
- Educate people about procedures and processes for communicating church messages
- Monitor analytics across all channels, reports on all communications actions, and regularly builds learning into future plans
- Crisis communication
- Community engagement strategy with local leaders and leaders from other churches
- Implement feedback mechanisms
BRAND MANAGEMENT & DESIGN
- Embraces and communicates the Midtown mission, vision, strategy and values
- Ensures messaging and graphics are on brand and follow the communications strategy
- Manage and train other staff on the Midtown brand
- Manage the freelance graphic designer
- Consult with staff on all graphics projects including website/social graphics, print projects, signage etc.
- Lead efforts to design all art and promotional materials related to the movement, congregations and ministries with a high standard of creativity, excellence and effectiveness
Education, Skills & Experience
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE
- Gifted and effective communicator both verbally and in writing
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, or related field (required)
- At least 3 years experience in Communications related position (required)
- At least 2 years experience in a church or non-profit communications (preferred)
- An active and committed Christian faith with beliefs and lifestyle consistent with the doctrine of the PCA
- Is or willing to become a member and regularly attend one of the Midtown Fellowship Church congregations
ADDITIONAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Ability to stay organized, think creatively, and be highly productive while working in a fast-paced and, at times, stressful environment
- Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate
- Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines
- Experience working with commercial business partners
- Proficient in Google Suite Apps (Gmail, Docs, Sheets etc.)
- Proven ability to tailor media plans consistent with messaging and target audience
- Demonstrated experience developing and working within creative briefs
- Proven ability to organize and manage many projects with a high attention to detail
