Job Description:

SUMMARY: The Director of Children & Community Life will provide logistical and relational leadership to Grace Meridian Hill's (1) children and youth ministries, and (2) community life ministries. Those who have a vibrant blend of gifts and experience in children's ministry and in administration/project management will flourish in this role.

I. CHILDREN & YOUTH (20 hrs)

Sunday Supervision (4 hrs)

  • Oversee the set up of classrooms and child check-in. Check in volunteers (teachers, assistants) and paid workers; welcome children and parents. Direct and support transition into classes (midservice). Be available during service for trouble-shooting; fill in as substitute class assistant if needed. Keep parents informed/engaged through regular communication via email, interpersonal contact, and annual parent meetings.

Volunteer Support & Administration (6 hrs)

  • Schedule teachers and assistants. Provide teachers with weekly lessons/materials. (Curriculum determined in advance by the overseeing pastor.) Encourage and equip teachers, assistants, and leaders with basic skills to manage classrooms and to follow protocols. Keep basic administrative systems orderly and effective (supplies, classrooms, class rosters, signage).

Special Events & Projects (6 hrs)

  • Organize seasonal opportunities for children's participation in main service (Advent/Christmas, Easter). Provide administrative support for children's baptisms and communicants classes. Plan and implement onsite childcare/activities for special ministries and events (Fall Retreat, Member Meetings, other special events). Create and coordinate fellowship and learning events for children or parents as opportunities arise.

Youth Ministry Coordination (4 hrs)

  • Provide logistical support to Youth leaders and Assistant Pastor for youth programming. Keep parents informed/engaged through regular communication (email). Help plan and coordinate youth events. Liaise with Grace DC Network youth programming.

II. COMMUNITY LIFE (20 hrs)

Events & Special Projects (8 hrs)

  • Plan and administrate logistics for major events, classes, and special services (All-Hands Meeting, Leadership Retreat, Fall Retreat, Advent services, Holy Week services, Church Picnic, MLK Day, Network Joint Worship/Annual Meeting). Recruit and build teams. Support and implement annual theme programming and other creative initiatives. Spearhead opportunities for fellowship and outreach. Serve as liaison to Grace Network for shared events/initiatives.

Member & Mission Systems (6 hrs)

  • Welcome newcomers/inquirers; direct them to appropriate info, ministries, people. Provide logistical support for the New Member process (seminar, interviews, integration), and for the ongoing care of members. Maintain member database/rolls. Support basic Life Group logistics, communication, and promotion. Mobilize members for ministry based on their gifts, availability, and church needs. Administrate evangelism, cross-cultural discipleship, mercy/neighbor, global missions programming as needed.

General Administration & Leadership (6 hrs)

  • Serve as point person for staff team; support the planning of weekly staff meetings. Maintain and update events on website and church calendar. Supervise and support weekly service and liturgy planning; recruit in-service participants (God at Work). Serve as internal communications hub among Staff, Shepherding Team, Diaconate. Respond to and redirect general requests submitted via email. Provide executive assistant support to Lead Pastor (calendar, scheduling) as needed.

Position Qualifications:

  • Prior experience with children and local church children's ministries (professionally or volunteer)
  • Organized; strong administrative and project management skills
  • Problem-solver; able to make and implement decisions confidently
  • Enjoys empowering others and working collaboratively in teams
  • Personable demeanor/style; able to set an encouraging/joyful "tone"
  • Embraces, and able to articulate and implement, Grace Meridian Hill's commitment to being a spiritually, culturally, and economically diverse community; personal faith in Jesus Christ
  • Background check required; experience in infant/child CPR certification a plus
