Director of Student Ministry

First Presbyterian Church Hattiesburg Full-time

Purpose: Under the oversight of the Senior Minister, Administrator, and Session, theDirector of Student Ministry (DSM) will oversee, develop, and implement the church's overall ministry to students in junior high and high school. His primary purpose is to shepherd the students of our congregation, and those connected to them, by engaging them with the Gospel in the context of large groups, small groups, and one-to-ones. By God's blessing, his goal is to see that these students love Christ and his church and are equipped to serve him.

I. Weekly DutiesA. Prepare lessons for Sunday School & Wednesday night. These lessons may take the formof Biblical expositional series, book studies, topical studies, etc…B. Pursue and cultivate discipleship relationships with students in one-on-one & smallgroup settings. Utilize social media, email, text, call, and traditional mail to disciple theyouth.C. Attend all Lord’s Day and Wednesday services unless providentially hindered orexcused.D. Meet weekly, plan, and pray with youth staff. Cultivate a shared vision of youth ministry.In time, this youth ministry team may include a female youth worker and additionalinterns.E. Communicate clearly and consistently with parents about youth ministry objectives,news, and events. Seek to cultivate a core of parental volunteers and include thosevolunteers in the ministry.F. Oversee youth budget and operating expenses.

II. Monthly DutiesA. Host monthly fellowship activities for both the junior and senior high studentsrespectively. Utilize parent volunteers in these offerings.B. Pursue our students at their schools by attending sporting events, especially those inwhich our students are participating. Attend lunches with students when possible.Coordinate with the PCS chaplain to exhort during chapel services as often as possible.C. Open your home to students when possible and practice hospitality.D. When necessary, work with the pastoral staff to address particular shepherding needs.E. Attend monthly session meetings.

III. Annual DutiesA. Plan and lead at least one annual mission trip. In time, it may be wise to offer separatejunior or senior high trips or one domestic and one foreign trip.B. Plan and lead Timbercreek retreat, assist with Against the Flow retreat, as well as otherretreats.C. Attend presbytery meetings as appropriate.D. Shadow elders in their shepherding roles.E. As opportunities arise, attend various conferences for personal and professionaldevelopment.F. In partnership with the session and the senior minister, assist with other pastoralduties as needed to care for the congregation.
