First Christian Church is associated with the Christian Churches and Churches of Christ. We are a church that is vibrant but not charismatic, conservative but not legalistic, loving but not universalist, and puts a high emphasis on baptism and the Lord's Supper. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a love for the Lord, a desire to grow both spiritually and professionally, a love for people, a love for teaching and preaching God's Word, and a desire to embrace our local culture and community. This candidate will demonstrate the fruit of the Spirit and have the qualities listed in 1 Timothy 3:2-7 and Titus 1:6-9. The candidate should have some experience leading a church staff.

Roanoke Rapids is located just off I-95 in a semi-rural community of approximately 14,000 people. JOB DESCRIPTION

LEAD MINISTER

Primary purpose

To provide vision, mission, strategy, and direction for the ministry of First Christian Church. The Lead Minister will provide spiritual leadership in all areas of evangelism and discipleship. It requires creating, communicating, and coordinating vision with the Eldership, Church Board, and staff as they minister and serve the church family and community. The Lead Minister will be responsible and charged with helping people grow in their commitment to Christ by seeking God's will in their life through example, action, and teaching of God's word.

Specific Responsibilities & Expectations:

  1. Must be a man who exhibits the Godly character qualities outlined in 1 Timothy 3: 1-7.
  2. Must have a meaningful daily prayer and devotional time.
  3. Prepares and delivers sermons that are relevant and challenge members and unchurched to become fully devoted followers of Christ.
  4. Ensure that overall weekly worship services are effective and on target regarding content, style, structure, and design.
  5. Suggests and assists with planning special worship services such as Christmas, Easter, and other special programs, including planning messages that are relevant for each occasion.
  6. Takes the initiative to recommend and implement actions that fulfill the vision and mission of FCC.
  7. Provides for overall training, inspiration, and motivation of FCC staff to ensure that they are maturing in their faith, growing in their relationships with each other, and upgrading their skills. Help staff and leadership develop their full personal and ministry potential through modeling and mentoring. Ensure both he and staff participate in quality professional development opportunities to enhance the "vision" of Jesus ‘ministry through FCC.
  8. Provide and assist with pastoral care, including:
    1. Hospital and sick calling
    2. Participate in the visitation program to visitors' and members' homes
    3. Reacting promptly to emergency/crisis situations
    4. Counseling as requested
    5. Conducting baptisms, weddings, and funerals as requested
  9. Develop and implement strategies for encouraging spiritual growth, maturity, and outreach
  10. Encourage growth by studying God's word, discipling, prayer, service, worship experiences, etc.
  11. Plan and pursue activities promoting fellowship, fun, and interaction in a thoroughly Christian atmosphere.
  12. Attend relevant church business meetings and coordinate activities with staff and other ministry teams.
  13. As time permits, participate in community events to foster community relations and outreach.
  14. Maintain family time, including weekly protected time and annual vacation periods. He should recognize the need for personal free time.
  15. Attend church services, church-wide events, and social functions on a regular basis.
  16. Church leadership reserves the right to add to or change these duties as deemed important.

Accountability

The Lead Minister will work closely with the ministerial staff and office staff. Ultimately, he will be accountable to the elders and to God. The Lead Minister should present monthly progress reports to the eldership. The elders will conduct an annual evaluation and, along with input from the church's members, will give a yearly evaluation to the Lead Minister. The Lead Minister is accountable to the elders for his performance using this job description as a guide. The Elders will make recommendations for continuation and compensation to the church board for review and adoption by the congregation at the annual meeting.
