As the Lead Teaching Pastor, your primary role as an elder in making disciples who make disciples is to lead through biblically rich, text-driven preaching while ensuring doctrinal integrity. You will collaborate with elders to guide the church's spiritual direction, vision, and long-term planning, while providing pastoral care. By demonstrating the centrality of the gospel, you'll mentor and counsel, equipping the congregation for ministry and disciple-making.
Job Description
Primary Responsibilities:
- Preaching and Teaching: Delivering expositional sermons and ensuring the quality of gospel-centered preaching, providing approximately 70% of the preaching at gatherings.
- Vision Casting and Strategic Planning: Developing and communicating the church's vision and mission in collaboration with elders and staff, and participating in long-term strategic planning.
- Spiritual and Theological Oversight: Providing spiritual guidance, maintaining doctrinal integrity, and ensuring all teachings and activities are biblically sound.
- Pastoral Care: Offering counseling, visitations, support in times of need, and performing funerals and weddings, in collaboration with pastors and staff.
- Leadership and Staff Development: Mentoring and training emerging leaders, including elders and ministry leaders, and developing new preachers through assessment and mentoring.
- Elder Collaboration: Working closely with the elder team to make strategic decisions, set goals, ensure effective shepherding, and coordinate elder training.
- Worship Planning: Coordinating with worship leaders to plan meaningful gatherings that foster spiritual formation and hospitality, and meeting weekly with the Worship Pastor for service coordination.
- Discipleship Pathway: Collaboratively fostering spiritual growth and maturity among members, and providing sermon notes for small group discussion guides.
- Community and Mission Outreach: Modeling and participating in community outreach and global mission initiatives to spread the gospel and make disciples.
- Mobilizing Service: Encouraging and mobilizing the church body to serve, join ministry teams, and support church ministries, facilitating discipleship and care among members.
- Healthy Team Focus: Cultivating a healthy ministry culture among both elder and staff teams, and modeling collaborative and encouraging leadership.
- Modeling Spiritual Maturity: Committing to personal spiritual growth and professional development through continuous learning, prayer, and study. Exemplifying servant leadership, humility, and ongoing spiritual growth, and helping the church fulfill its mission as a kingdom community.
- Cultural Impact: Modeling a healthy, Christ-centered culture, improving the church's cultural and theological depth, and cultivating an atmosphere of hospitality and Christ-centered worship.
Reporting Structure
- The Lead Teaching Pastor is accountable to and works as one among equals on the team of Elders.
Requirements
Preferred Ministry Experience and Qualifications
- Bible Study and Exposition: Proficient in studying and expounding biblical texts.
- Pastoral Experience: At least ten years of pastoral experience, preferably in a multi-staff church.
- Vision Development and Communication: Demonstrated experience in developing and communicating a church vision.
- Team Building and Leadership Development: Proven ability to start and develop teams, and mentor emerging leaders.
- Ministry Organization: Track record of building and organizing ministry within a church context.
- Educational Background: Possession of a seminary Master's Degree or Doctoral Degree.
- Passionate Preacher and Communicator: Capable of teaching God's Word clearly, creatively, and concisely, effectively equipping the congregation. Able to clearly communicate the Gospel and biblical doctrine.
- Theological Proficiency: a student and guardian of biblical theology leading to sound orthodoxy and orthopraxy.
The Lead Teaching Pastor is a member of the Elder Team and as such, must meet the biblical qualifications of elders.

- Spiritual Gifts: Possesses the spiritual gifts correlational to being a Pastor/Teacher.

- Role Model: Represents a Christ-like role model and is above reproach.
- Team Player: Collaborative and effective team player, able to bridge ministry areas.
- Servant Leader: Leads with a heart of service, bringing order and oversight to the church.
- Spiritual Maturity: Not a recent convert; maintains a disciplined spiritual life and sound doctrine that exemplifies the fruit of the Spirit while also the discipling of others.
- Spirit Led: Sensitive to, responsive to, and dependent on the work and leading of the Holy Spirit.
- Sober-minded: Lives a balanced life with a sound thought process, not easily overtaken by trends, theological curiosities or cultural pressures.
