Reporting to the Chair of Mechanical Engineering, this person will supervise the daily operations of the Giaimo Mechanical Engineering Lab (shop) to include overseeing student work in the shop and teaching students to use the equipment.

Job duties include:
- Maintain a safe and functional workspace in the machine shop.
- Ensure that the equipment, tools, and machinery are in safe and operable condition.
- Assist students in the use of machine tools, machining techniques, and safety practices
- Supervise students in the safe operation of hand tools and power equipment.
- Maintain a clean, functional workspace in the machine shop by coordinating regular cleanup, maintenance, and repair of equipment.
- Manage the shop budget, maintaining accurate budget planning and expense records and remaining within cost budget allocations.
- Order shop supplies and materials as well as maintain shop inventory.
- Consult with students prior to fabrication: review blueprints, drawings, sketches, and concepts per verbal consultations and redesign where applicable in order to fabricate a component and/or assembly that is feasible in design, cost effective and will result in a fully functioning component or assembly.
- Provide assistance to faculty and students for the selection of proper materials and part configuration for their projects. Suggest standard commercially available components when possible.
- Teach a one-credit introductory course on use of the machine tools each quarter (or as needed)
- Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and department mission.
Requirements:
- Display a professional and positive attitude.
- Experience advising and training on the use of machine shop equipment for metal fabrication (mills, lathes, welding, and associated equipment)
- Must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds.
- Must be able to climb stairs and ladders while carrying supplies or equipment.
- Effective work habits including commitment to quality, attention to detail, and time management. Ability to work independently and strategically to efficiently manage workload.
- Education or training at the level to ensure ability to understand, speak, read, and write English.
- Associate’s Degree and two years of directly related, full-time experience will be considered or five years of directly applicable full-time experience.Preferred qualifications
- Experience managing a Machine Shop.
- Experience designing and fabricating prototypes, complex laboratory equipment, and/or mechanical/electronic components.
- Experience using Solidworks or other CAD/CAM software
- Experience advising on, training on, and maintaining, digital manufacturing tools, and materials.
- Highly proficient, professional experience in word processing, spreadsheet management, electronic messaging and internet applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Apps, etc.).
- Enjoyment of and experience with interacting with a diversity of people
- Bachelor’s Degree.

Salary: $28.00 to $32.00 per hour, DOE
This is a 32 hour per week position of 11 months per year (to be determined in conversation with applicant), with excellent benefits. SPU pays the employee premium for medical, dental, and vision insurance. SPU makes generous contributions to an employee HSA account and a 7% contribution to a retirement account, for eligible employees, with immediate vesting in the plan.
