Minister of Children and Families
Job Description
Principal Function:
The Minister of Children and Families is responsible for planning, promoting, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive ministry program for children from birth through sixth grade, and their families.
Working Relationships:
The Minister of Children and Families reports directly to the Senior Pastor and works collaboratively with the pastoral staff, church committees, and ministry teams. The role requires close coordination with other church leaders to ensure the integration of the children's ministry into the broader church mission. The Minister must also work effectively with volunteers, parents, and children to create a nurturing and spiritually enriching environment.
Qualifications:
• Faith and Calling: Must be a born-again Christian with a clear calling to minister to children, aligned with Southern Baptist faith and doctrines (e.g., Baptist Faith and Message 2000).
• Education: Bachelor's Degree required and seminary degree preferred
• Experience: Minimum of three to five years' experience in children's ministries or Christian education; additional experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.
• Residence: Resides in and is active in the Covington community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
· Ministry Program Development and Implementation:
o Develop and implement age-appropriate programs for children from birth through sixth grade, including Sunday School, Sunday morning Children's Church, Wednesday night programs, nursery, children's mission education, Vacation Bible School, summer camps and activities, fall event (Trunk-R-Treat), and worship integration.
· Volunteer Management:
o Develop an ongoing recruiting program, train, and supervise volunteers and leaders for children's ministries, ensuring all volunteers meet our requirements for working with minors.
o Provide ongoing training and support to ensure volunteers are equipped to teach and mentor children effectively.
· Family Engagement and Outreach:
o Develop strategies to engage families of children, equipping them with tools to help raise and disciple their children.
o Organize events and seminars for parents to support their role in their children's spiritual development.
· Safety and Compliance:
o Working alongside our Administrator, establish and maintain safety and security policies for children's ministries, including background checks for volunteers and adherence to child protection guidelines.
· Administrative Responsibilities:
o Prepare and manage the annual budget for children's ministries.
o Maintain records and accounts for resources, order and distribute literature, supplies, and equipment.
o Create and lead in Children's Ministry Team and advise on children's ministry needs, including physical space, equipment, and supplies.
· Spiritual Leadership:
o Serve as a spiritual role model and leader for children and families, providing counseling and guidance as needed.
o Foster a sense of community and caring within the children's ministry.
o Counsel children and their families on conversion and church membership in accordance with church policy.
· Collaboration and Teamwork:
o Work collaboratively with the pastoral staff, other ministry leaders, and church committees to align children's ministry with the church's overall mission.
o Attend staff meetings and participate in church-wide planning and events.
o Assist pastoral duties of preaching, communion, baptisms, and other duties assigned by the Pastor.
· Professional Development:
o Stay informed about current trends and best practices in children's ministry through seminars, conferences, and continuous learning.
· Skills and Abilities:
o Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
o Ability to work effectively with children, parents, volunteers, and church staff.
o Knowledge of child development (spiritual, emotional, intellectual, physical, and social).
o Commitment to safety and security, including implementing child protection policies.
o Proficiency in budgeting, record-keeping, and using technology for ministry management.
o Excellent interpersonal and counseling skills.
o Flexibility, calmness under pressure, and strong conflict management abilities.
o Must possess solid time management and organizational skills and have the ability to set priorities, coordinate several activities at once and to quickly analyze and resolve problems.
o Possess the ability to communicate and establish effective working relationships with all levels of people, conveying genuine concern for their needs and a desire to provide exceptional care.
