Job Description:

As a mission-driven school, faculty members play a central role in fulfilling our mission. Hired by and subject to the supervision of the Director of the Rhetoric School (grades 9-12), the Orchestra Teacher is an exempt position. There are currently two orchestras in the music program: Dialectic School (grades 7 & 8) and Rhetoric School (grades 9-12). There are also cocurricular orchestra programs that meet before or after school: Philharmonia (beginning), and Chamber (intermediate/advanced). The Orchestra Teacher will be responsible for posting lesson plans, tracking progress, and communicating with parents.
The performance expectations of the Orchestra Teacher include large seasonal concerts (Lessons and Carols and Spring Concert), bi-annual String Showcases, chapel services, occasional assembly performances, and end-of-year closing ceremonies. The Orchestra Teacher is responsible for all planning, communication, and publicity for the String Showcase and will collaborate with the Music Director, Grammar School Music Teachers, Advancement Office, and Lead Teachers for other smaller performances throughout the school year.
This position is presented here as a part-time teaching position. Other work opportunities may be available for those seeking full-time employment.

Essential Duties
Specific Job Responsibilities:
  • Direct and build the orchestra program
  • Run the Orchestra program which includes weekly rehearsals, literature selection, seasonal performances, and growth/recruitment.
  • Instrument inventory management and rental, instrumental library cataloguing and maintenance.

Personal Profile
Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • Has a bachelor's degree in music education or elementary music education.
  • Is proficient in strings, guitar, piano, and voice.
  • Has 3+ years teaching experience.
  • Has experience teaching music in a Christian classical school.
  • Enjoys teaching children and can set developmentally appropriate expectations for learning and behavior.
  • Can instruct, develop, manage and grow the orchestra program.
  • Is active in local music/music educator organizations.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of and skill in implementing classical curriculum and pedagogy and seeks to grow in his/her understanding of this tradition in order to re-imagine and embody the richest practices of Christian, liberal arts education.
