Job Overview

The Pastor of Soul Care (Biblical Counseling) serves as the primary vision caster, developer, trainer, and intensive counselor for biblical counseling at Pennington Park Church. He will provide regular one-on-one and team counseling and act as a ministry multiplier, focusing on equipping others to serve in the ministry of Biblical Counseling. He will be responsible for establishing and building a Soul Care Ministry and forming a Soul Care Team. Additionally, he will also oversee the Deacons and Care Ministry of the church, mobilizing others to care for one another. He will report to the Pastor of Ministries.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree required, master's degree preferred in relevant field
  • Certified or becoming certified in biblical counseling through ACBC or a similar organization (ABC, CEF, etc.)
  • Experience in pastoral counseling of at least 3 years

NECESSARY SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • A strong composition of many or all of the following: compassionate, shepherding, teaching, leadership, administration, team-building, coaching, and collaboration
  • Must be competent to counsel, including corrective and intensive cases
  • A growing and self-motivated leader who seeks to understand the biblical counseling movement and how to best leverage resources to equip the church
  • Clear ability to equip people to apply the Word in daily life and relationships
  • Capable of handling conflict and all circumstances with wisdom, maturity, and discernment
  • Demonstrated ability in teaching and equipping with passion and clarity and instruct others with biblical truth that is sensitive and patient yet firm and compelling
  • Able to articulate ideas clearly with well-developed interpersonal skills
  • Is prepared to develop and lead a team that can respond to crises and follow-up appropriately
  • A collaborative and effective team player who has the ability to bring leaders together, bridge ministry areas, and advance the overall mission and vision of PPC

SPIRITUAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Exhibits the fruit of the Spirit mentioned in Galatians 5:22-23
  • Participates regularly in the spiritual disciplines and biblical community
  • Meets the character and qualifications of an elder (1 Tim. 3:1-7; Titus 1:5- 9)
  • Is a member of PPC in good standing or willing to become a member

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Establish and Lead the Soul Care Ministry

  • Develop and implement the vision and infrastructure for a thriving Soul Care Ministry.
  • Build and implement an effective process for congregants to request and receive biblical counseling and care
  • Cast a vision for Soul Care to the congregation, elder council, church staff, lay leadership, etc.
  • Provide training and equipping for the Elders and staff
  • Develop additional counseling resources that are Christ-centered and Bible-saturated
  • Collaborate with the Directional Team to develop and integrate Soul Care principles across various ministries (small groups, shepherding, discipleship, children's ministry, students ministry, etc.)
  • Provide oversight and development of the Soul Care staff (part-time assistant and part-time Compassion and Care Pastor)
  • Develop, implement, and lead new opportunities to care for church members and the local community in ways that will advance the gospel and meet practical and tangible needs
  • Oversee and manage the Counseling Ministry budget

2. Build a Soul Care Team and Provide Lay Counseling Oversight and Training

  • Establish and build a Soul Care team that equips the saints for the work of ministry and care for others
  • Recruit and train lay counselors to minister in various counseling settings
  • Provide accountability, coaching, and follow-up with lay counselors
  • Available and accessible to the Elders and Soul Care leaders for support and consultation in counseling cases

3. Provide Counseling

  • Counsel cases at all levels, including at the corrective and intensive level
  • Consistently engage in one-on-one, team, and small group counseling of PPC individuals and families
  • Include co-counselors and observers in counseling whenever possible
  • Provide case management follow-up through phone and email contact
  • Focus on helping the most hurting and complex issues with PPC individuals and families

4. Oversee the Deacons and the Care Ministry

  • Be the linchpin between the elder council and the deacons
  • Provide communication, organization, identification, and training to the deacons to maximize their gifts and support the elder's shepherding model
  • Mobilize and empower the deacons in strategic ways to meet needs within the congregation
  • Build and oversee the care and compassion ministry, training and mobilizing the congregation to care for one another
  • Be willing, if needed, to assist and/or conduct funerals
  • Oversee and manage the Benevolence budget

5. Additional Responsibilities

  • Preach and fulfill other pastoral responsibilities during the Sunday morning service on an as-needed basis
  • Serve on the elder council as an elder
  • Serve as a standing member of the Shepherding committee
  • Assist in various pastoral care duties as needed
  • Attendance at staff meetings, retreats, and other staff functions required
  • Attendance at other assigned meetings is required

ANTICIPATED TIME COMMITMENTS AND COMPENSATION

  • This is a full-time, salaried role with full benefits totaling approximately 40 hours weekly
  • Must be willing to work Sundays, some evenings, and occasional weekends
