Pastor

Job Overview

Villa Grove Fellowship is seeking a pastor to deliver weekly sermons and serve as our
church’s spiritual leader. We are looking for someone who is passionate for Christ and
compassionate for the people. We are a self-supporting, self-governing, biblically based, Christ
centered non-denominational church welcoming to all Christian believers. Villa Grove
Fellowship has experienced strong growth and serves as a spiritual hub for the area with
parishioners traveling from within walking distance to driving greater than 50 miles to attend.

We have no debt, own our building and have a conflict free, unified, committed, loving body of
believers. We have a church family consisting of people from many walks of life and
denominations, as well as many veterans and first responders. Our current missions include
the support of pro-life crisis pregnancy centers serving our area and the surrounding counties.
Villa Grove is a small, rural mountain community in the San Luis Valley of Colorado at the base
of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. We have a mixture of both older congregants and families
with young children. Weekly attendance averages 85 parishioners. Our location, while
beautiful, is remote. The nearest gas station and small grocery is 19 miles away. The nearest
full service town is 25 miles away over a mountain pass.

Job Description

Open Position:  Pastor/Spiritual Leader

[email protected]

Calling:

In Acts 1:8 God called us (His disciples) to be His witnesses in “…Jerusalem, Judea, Sumaria and to the ends of the earth”.

Applying this scripture to our congregation, we are to be His witnesses in Villa Grove, the San Luis Valley, the State of Colorado, and the world.  We are seeking a leader who will guide this flock, equip the saints, comfort the weary, encourage us all in the fulfillment of the Great Commission.

Qualifications:

Titus 1:6-9 NIV

An elder must be blameless, faithful to his wife, a man whose children believe and are not open to the charge of being wild and disobedient. Since an overseer manages God’s household, he must be blameless-not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain.   Rather, he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined.  He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it. We seek to follow the Lord’s guidance and the scripture above is a minimum set of requirements. In addition to being a believer, we seek a candidate who has made a public confession of their faith by following our Lord in baptism.

We also believe that God has provided solid biblical instruction and the development of leadership skills to prepare pastors for His service through a number of educational institutions / seminaries, and other training opportunities. Appropriate training will help ensure the candidates success in fulfilling the role of pastor of Villa Grove Fellowship. While not an absolute requirement, a degree from an accredited institution, certifications, ordination, and prior experience will help us to identify the right candidate.

Accountability:

Romans 14:12 NIV

So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.

Ultimately our highest accountability is to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. That is true for our new pastor, but it is also true of those whom God has entrusted with overseeing Villa Grove Fellowship. For the health of the church the pastor will be accountable to the Board of Advisors.  The Board of Advisors will approve the successful applicant and can dismiss the pastor for just cause. The Board of Advisors will also approve changes to the Mission Statement and Doctrinal Statement submitted by the pastor. The Board looks forward to partnering with you in shaping the future direction of the church.

Job Description:

1 Peter 5:1-4 NIV

To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed:] Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them-not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve;  not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.  And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.

The duties of a head pastor are difficult to enumerate, and ultimately are driven by obedience to  the leading of the Holy Spirit. We know that we can not provide monetary compensation appropriate for all that you will do.  We as a church body will come alongside and ease the burden where we can, but you will be required to lead that effort, and humble enough to ask for help.  Some things are unique to the position, and will fall squarely on your shoulders. These include:

  • Provide a weekly spirit filled message taken directly from scripture that is easily understood, and encourages the congregation in their walk with the Lord.  This includes people who have been saved for many years, new believers, and the unsaved.
  • Coordinate with the worship team to enhance the weekly message and honor God with music and hymns.
  • Lead the congregation in the Lord’s Supper on a monthly basis
  • Provide oversight and guidance to the Bible study classes and children’s ministry.
  • Work with the Board of Trustees to set priorities, and use the resources that God has provided us with.
  • Provide pastoral care for the congregation and community such as
    • Baptisms
    • Weddings
    • Funerals
    • Visiting the sick and those in need of encouragement

Every individual works at their own pace. On average sermon preparation is said to require around 15 hours per week.  The other tasks will likely not require over 5 hours per week. Our goal is to continue growing the church to support a full time pastor. Until that time this schedule should allow a second source of income.
