Job Overview

This position is full-time. The position involves assisting the Pastor in seeing the mission of Grace Lakin is fulfilled, particularly in the area of ministry to youth. Responsibilities, as listed on the following page, can be tailored to reflect the individual's personal spiritual gifts, interests, and calling. This "tailoring" must be agreed upon by the Session (the ruling board of the church). Desired outcomes include an increase in the spiritual growth of the youth of the congregation (through such activities as Bible study, worship, and fellowship); an increase in the amount of ministry being accomplished by the youth (plugging them into doing ministry), and numerical increase through outreach to other youth.

The Youth Director will be accountable to the Session, and indirectly accountable to the Pastor. It will be expected the Youth Director will meet monthly with the Session or with a designated Elder of Session.

The Youth Director will set goals for ministry. The performance of the Youth Director will be evaluated and reviewed at least annually by the session. The evaluation will be based on effectiveness in reaching the goals of this position. The Session will ensure that appropriate coaching be done to assist the Youth Director in seeking to improve upon any growth areas identified through the evaluation process. If the Session decides the Youth Director is to be terminated, the Youth Director will be given notice of termination at least thirty (30) days in advance. Likewise, the Youth Director will be expected to give at least thirty (30) days notice of intention to resign.

Job Description

Purpose: The Youth Director of Grace Lakin will oversee the spiritual, emotional, social, and physical growth of the youth of the church – 3rd through high school. The Youth Director shall coordinate Bible studies, activities, and fellowship times to enhance the lives of our young people. The Youth Director will be a role model (not a buddy) to the teens and an instructor in the Biblical ideals of leadership, just as Paul told Timothy in his letter of encouragement.

Leadership Roles:

  • Plan and lead training sessions for volunteers aiding with the youth. Regular meetings with volunteers should be held to discuss and plan activities.
  • Decide on meeting times, preferably making a tentative calendar/outline 6-months to one year in advance which includes such items as weekly meetings, special activities, weekend outings, and mission trips.
  • Choose a course of study for the youth that will enable them to learn the redemptive story of the Bible so they live an effective Christian life through the grace of Christ.
  • Plan and enable youth ministry/mission trips periodically and work with other youth groups to do combined ministry/mission projects.
  • Evaluate the youth program at the end of the year and report the successes and failures to the Session and the Administrative Committee.
  • Be a counselor and confidant to the youth as needed. (Every confidentiality should be kept unless it is a danger to the teen or needs professional guidance).
  • Become acquainted with people and give such information to Pastor, teachers, children and youth workers as seems advisable.
  • Establish a relationship with teens to become aware of areas in their life where they may need help
  • Be faithful in keeping appointments. Make clear plans on communicating with parents through email, text, newsletters, calendars, and parent meetings.
  • Make a monthly report to the Elders on Session directly or through the committee of Session overseeing the area of youth.

Hedges for Employment:

  • When meeting with youth, two or more youth must be present
  • No one-on-one meetings with the youth in private
  • No providing rides home to youth alone
  • Two leaders must be present in all private meetings with the opposite gender (unless in a very public meeting area with many people visible to meeting. (Example: Cotton Wood Coffee)
  • No youth at your home after legal curfew unless permission given by a parent.
  • If single, no dating a youth

Compensation Package:

  • Housing Allowance
  • Total Annual compensation of $42,000 paid in monthly installments of $3,500.
  • 3 Weeks of Vacation per year
  • The package does not include a benefits package.
