A senior pastor search is the most consequential call a congregation makes, and it is also the slowest. Most searches run six months to two years: a committee forms, a profile is written, candidates preach in view of a call, and in many polities a presbytery or association examines the candidate before a vote.
If you are a candidate, two things are worth knowing. First, the majority of these roles are filled through relationships and recommendations before or alongside any public posting, so being known in your network matters as much as your resume. Second, fit is examined closely — expect to be asked about your convictions, your philosophy of ministry and your preaching in detail.
