PROFILE - FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF LAKE PLACID, ARP
1926 and current
The Lake Placid ARP Church held its first service on May 9, 1926, with 24 charter members present. The property, church, and manse were donated to the Home Missions Board by the E. C. Stuart family of Bartow. Reverend Robert E. Huey was the first minister sent by the Missions Board. Over the 100 years of First Presbyterian Church of Lake Placid, the church has been served by fourteen pastors, many of whom were graduates of Erskine Seminary. The present Senior Pastor, Reverend Reid Thayer (who was Called August 26, 2025), is among them. Reverend Drew Severance has served as Associate Pastor since 1999.
In 1957 an educational wing was added to the church. A beautiful new manse was built in 1969 and was first occupied by Reverend Bob DeWitt and family. The sanctuary was enlarged in 1976 to its present size. In 1982 a large fellowship hall, church office, parlor, and classrooms were added. The educational building was expanded in 1990 to include more classrooms, a library, and a music department. Another manse was acquired in the early 1990's for the associate pastor. In 1995 a house east of the Associate Pastor's manse was purchased and is the Youth Power House. In 1999 a small house across from the church was purchased and renovated for use as the church office.
On February 17, 2002, a contemporary worship service was held in Friendship Hall, with 180 in attendance. As attendance and outreach grew, it led to the vision for a community center at the church. In 2015 construction was completed on the Genesis Center, a 20,000 sq. foot outreach building that is the home for the contemporary service, sports ministries, concerts, theatrical programs, community events, and much more.
Currently there are two services of worship each Lord's Day, May through December: a traditional service at 9:00 am in the sanctuary and a contemporary service at 11:00 am in the Genesis Center. Starting in January and continuing through Easter, there are three services, 8:00 am traditional service in the sanctuary, 9:30 am traditional service in the sanctuary, and an 11:00 am contemporary service in the Genesis Center to accommodate winter residents. At the peak during the winter, the attendance ranges from 400 to 500 for all three services.
Due to God's grace the church has steadily grown over the years. There are many ministries and programs that serve all ages. There are also numerous ways to be connected. Visit FPC's website at www.fpclp.com to explore the various ministries and programs.
