Position Summary

The Pastor of Education serves as a shepherd, teacher, theologian, and soul-care provider for the congregation. This role exists to cultivate a church culture deeply rooted in Scripture, sound doctrine, spiritual maturity, and Christ-centered discipleship. The Pastor of Education will joyfully know, love, pray for, and walk alongside God's people, believing that theological depth and shepherding go hand-in-hand. He will labor to ensure that doctrine does not remain merely understood but is embraced, lived, and treasured within the life of the local church.

This position reflects the historic biblical vision of the pastor as both shepherd and theologian—one who faithfully studies, proclaims, defends, and applies the whole counsel of God for the edification and protection of Christ's church.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Preaching and Teaching

  • Faithfully preach and teach Scripture through expository, Christ-centered ministry.

  • Develop and deliver theological teaching that equips members to understand and apply biblical doctrine.

  • Ensure that all teaching ministries of the church are grounded in sound theology and faithful biblical interpretation.

  • Equip the saints to faithfully teach, disciple, counsel, and apply Scripture within the life of the church.

Theological Leadership

  • Serve as the church's primary theological resource and guide.

  • Provide doctrinal oversight for preaching, teaching, discipleship, and ministry programs.

  • Help the congregation understand and apply biblical truth to contemporary cultural, ethical, and ministry issues.

  • Assist church leadership in maintaining doctrinal fidelity and theological clarity.

  • Contribute written theological resources, articles, classes, or study materials that strengthen the church's discipleship efforts.

Biblical Counseling and Training

  • Provide certified biblical counseling for individuals, couples, families, and ministry leaders.

  • Apply biblical truth and gospel-centered care to issues such as marriage, parenting, grief, anxiety, addiction, conflict, suffering, spiritual struggles, and life transitions.

  • Develop counseling ministries that equip members to minister effectively to one another.

  • Train and mentor lay counselors and ministry leaders in biblical soul care.

  • Collaborate with elders and ministry leaders to ensure comprehensive pastoral care for the congregation.

Shepherding and Discipleship

  • Provide pastoral oversight and spiritual care to church members.

  • Mentor emerging leaders, teachers, and future pastors.

  • Foster a culture of theological reflection, spiritual growth, and biblical wisdom throughout the church.

Leadership and Collaboration

  • Work collaboratively with elders, staff, and ministry leaders to advance the church's mission.

  • Support strategic ministry planning through theological and pastoral insight.

  • Promote unity, doctrinal integrity, and spiritual health within the congregation.

Qualifications

Spiritual Qualifications

  • Meets the biblical qualifications for elders/pastors outlined in 1 Timothy 3:1–7 and Titus 1:5–9.

  • Demonstrates godly character, spiritual maturity, humility, and servant leadership.

  • Evidence of a vibrant personal walk with Christ and commitment to prayer and the ministry of the Word.

Educational and Professional Qualifications

  • Master's degree from an accredited theological seminary (MDiv required; ThM or doctoral studies preferred).

  • Formal theological training with demonstrated competency in biblical studies, theology, and pastoral ministry.

  • Certification through a recognized biblical counseling organization (e.g., ACBC, IABC, CCEF, or equivalent), or willingness to obtain certification.

  • Experience in pastoral ministry, preaching, teaching, and counseling.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong theological depth combined with practical pastoral wisdom.

  • Ability to communicate complex theological concepts in accessible and edifying ways.

  • Demonstrated competency in biblical counseling and discipleship.

  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, and mentoring skills.

  • Commitment to applying biblical truth to both congregational life and individual soul care.

As Pastor of Education, this leader will help the church understand, embrace, and live out biblical truth. Through preaching, teaching, theological reflection, and biblical counseling, he will equip the congregation to grow in Christlikeness, wisdom, and faithfulness.

The successful candidate will demonstrate the conviction that theology is not merely an academic discipline but a vital ministry of the church, intended to nourish believers, guard against error, and provide biblical wisdom for every area of life and ministry. This will include publishing for the health of the local but also universal body, and ability to interact with both academic and popular theological treatments.
