Pastoral Intern
The internship is a full-time residency that exists to equip men, preferably in seminary, or completed seminary, who are aiming towards some type of full-time pastoral ministry.
Our goal is to help train men who have an interest in serving as a lead, preaching pastor, or as an associate pastor. Interns spend a lot of time observing and learning from the pastoral staff— especially the Senior Pastor. This includes participating in regular meetings and special gatherings, traveling with the Senior Pastor, engaging in sermon preparation discussions, and more. Other pastors also invest in the interns, providing insight into their respective areas of ministry. We offer the internship program to two men each year. It lasts approximately nine months, and occurs from September to May. We usually expect an intern applicant to have completed his undergraduate degree, and prefer them to be in, or a graduate of, seminary, but there is flexibility.
Reading & Writing – The bulk of the intern's office time will be spent reading and writing. There is approximately 4,000–6,000 pages of reading. A short paper is written on each book that engages its thesis and value for pastoral ministry. Interns participate in a weekly reading discussion with pastoral staff.
Involvement with Pastors – Interns meet regularly with the pastors one on one. They also attend pastors' meetings and other leadership planning meetings throughout the semester. Interns will receive numerous opportunities to serve in multiple capacities. However, FBCT does not build ministry on interns (teaching publicly, leading small groups, etc.), and men should not expect the internship to be a time where their teaching gifts are tested.
Involvement as a Member – During the internship, interns are members of FBCT and are expected to be faithful to attend and to be involved in knowing and loving members and guests during their time.
Who is eligible? – We welcome applications from men, preferably who are in, or who have completed, seminary, who are aiming at some type of pastoral ministry and who are able to affirm the Baptist Faith and Message 2000. Two men are invited to participate each year. If you are interested in being considered for one of these two openings, please send your resume with a picture of yourself included, to us at [email protected]
Logistics – The internship is a full-time, nine-month residency program (~50hrs/wk from September–May). The church provides a modest living stipend, and when possible, arranges housing with a church member to reduce expenses. While the internship is not designed to offer significant financial support, it is a limited season of ministry preparation that requires a sacrifice and dependence on the Lord. Many interns rely on personal savings, raised support, or a spouse's income during this time. (More details are provided during the application process.)
