MPLBC Senior Pastor Job Description 4.8.2025 Page 1 Senior Pastor – Maple Park Lutheran Brethren Church Job Description Ministry Purpose: To provide the church with a shepherd-leader who carries the primary responsibility of leading the church in fulfilling its mission, which is to "go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." Matt 28:19-20 NIV. In discharging that responsibility, the pastor will "prepare God's people for works of service so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ". Ephesians 4:12-13 Responsibilities: 1. Discipling (https://clba.org/disciplemakingchurch ) ministry leaders and the congregants to include: a. Baptizing in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit all those willing, and b. Teaching them to obey all that Jesus commanded to include: i. Sermons, teachings, bible studies, confirmation, prayer, and devotionals, and ii. Leading by example and leaning on the Holy Spirit, and c. Making disciples who make disciples, and d. Giving spiritual guidance to those seeking pastoral care. 2. Planning and conducting Sunday and other special services to include communication and coordination with musicians, A/V helpers, choir, communion helpers, and ushers. 3. Serve as chief coordinator and communicator of all church ministries 4. Partner with the visitation ministry by participation in and equipping others to do the same. 5. Follow guidance found in the CLBA Ministerial Acts Book (CLB-Ministerial-Acts-Interactive.pdf ) and the Ministers of the Gospel Handbook (The Pastoral Office Policies). 6. Chief of staff: supervision and support of all church staff including annual performance evaluations, goals and objectives with each. Authority: 1. To hire, fire, and supervise church staff in consultation with elder board. Assign duties formally, clearly, and appropriately. 2. To plan, design, and conduct Sunday and other special services and plan for absences Accountability: 1. To the board of elders 2. Plan and publish a schedule of office hours including a week day off to facilitate meeting with leaders, congregants, those in need of spiritual guidance, premarital counselling, etc. MPLBC Senior Pastor Job Description 4.8.2025 Page 2 2. Maintain up to date job descriptions for staff and share changes with elders. Approve and record all vacation, sick leave, and extended absences for staff. 3. Maintain an up to date policy and procedures manual and employee manual and share all changes with elders 4. Deliver to elders a written copy of each annual staff performance evaluation, goals and objectives. 5. Disclose to elders any disciplinary measures taken with staff. 6. Maintain confidential records of staff subject to review by elders. 7. Deliver to elders a certificate of completion of a Pastoral Continuing Education program (on-line or in-person) at least one month prior to Annual Meeting of congregation. 8. Make regular and timely updates to congregational prayer items announced to the congregation. 9. Deliver to elders a yearly vacation schedule plan with staffing provisions 30 days prior to the annual meeting. 10. Deliver to elders a worship service schedule thirty days in advance of the fiscal year end to include worship leaders, sermon texts, and speakers, planned absences and vacation for the upcoming year. 11. Deliver to the elders a monthly report of pastoral activities to include ministry coordination activities, administrative changes, delegation, or accomplishments, visitation, counselling, staff issues, prayer needs, weddings, and funerals. 12. Conduct and/or supervise new member classes and confirmation classes at least yearly as fits. 13. Conduct weekly staff meeting to plan the week's work as appropriate. 14. Attend meetings of the elder board as a full member. 15. Maintain up to date messaging for the church using written and electronic means including web site and pertinent social media.
