Job Overview

The Grove Church is a non-denominational church seeking to fill the role of Teaching and Discipleship Pastor to join the other elders in shepherding and leading the church. We are a church committed to strengthening our foundation, loving our community, and reaching the nations in Jesus' name. The Teaching and Discipleship Pastor should embody the qualifications for elders outlined in the pastoral epistles. Additionally, he should be:

    • Prepared to Preach and Teach: Skilled in rightly handling the Word of Truth (2 Timothy 2:15). He should be passionate about proclaiming the Gospel and applying scripture to the lives of believers. While either pursuing or having completed his educational or seminary goals, he should be committed to continuously improving in his ability to teach with depth and precision.
    • In Right Relationship with the Lord: Committed to personal communion with God through prayer, study of His Word, and reliance on the Holy Spirit. His ministry should flow outward from a strong inward spiritual life.
    • A Humble and Personable Leader: Not domineering or self-promoting, but one who leads by example, and uses the gifts of others to foster unity within the church body. He should seek to be approachable and desire to be among the people.
    • Experienced in Ministry: More than 5 years of pastoral experience, including preaching, counseling, and church leadership. The ideal candidate will have experience leading a staff and serving within a plurality of elders.
  • Burdened for Children and Families: He will train, equip, and encourage parents in their roles as the main disciplers in the home. He will also train, organize, and serve alongside volunteer leaders as they teach and love the children of the church.

Teaching and Discipleship Pastor Job Description

Position Summary

The primary responsibilities of the Teaching and Discipleship Pastor will be to serve as a biblically qualified elder, faithfully preach and teach God's Word, and to shepherd the discipleship leaders in the church, those leaders primarily being the Home Group and Youth and Children's ministry leaders. In partnership with the other elders, the Teaching and Discipleship Pastor provides spiritual leadership, doctrinal oversight, and shepherding care for these leaders.

Primary Responsibilities

1. Preaching and Teaching

  • Join a rotation of expositional preaching. Expectations are to preach roughly two Sundays per month.
  • Lead the coordination of sermon series planning and scheduling.
  • Willing to teach in other settings as needed.
  • Model sound biblical interpretation and exegetical faithfulness.

2. Spiritual Leadership and Shepherding

  • Serve as a Staff Elder, sharing in the spiritual oversight of the congregation.
  • Along with the other elders, oversee, support, and care for Home Group leaders, Deacons, Youth Group leaders, Children's Ministry leaders, and other ministry leads and teams.
  • Assist in matters of church discipline, membership, and pastoral care.
  • Model a life of humility, integrity, hospitality, and love for the Church.

3. Discipleship and Equipping

  • Oversee and lead regular training and equipping events for volunteer leaders.
  • Help to cultivate a culture of biblical discipleship and fellowship.
  • Coordinate with Elders to monitor ongoing ministries.
  • Coordinate with the Elders to lead in development of new ministries.
  • Coordinate with the Elders to assist in the development of plans for future church growth and planting.

Biblical and Theological Commitments

The Teaching and Discipleship Pastor must:

Give clear evidence of a credible profession of faith in Jesus Christ and a life marked by repentance and holiness.

  • Meet the biblical qualifications for an elder as outlined in 1 Timothy 3:1–7 and Titus 1:5–9.
  • Affirm and teach in accordance with the Doctrinal Statement of The Grove Church.

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated gifting and experience in expositional preaching and teaching.
  • Willingness to submit to and serve within an elder-led church.
  • Previous experience leading and motivating volunteers, especially in family ministries.
  • Previous experience leading a church staff.
  • Completion of seminary or equivalent theological degree preferred, but not required.
